Sam & Katie’s Wedding on Derwentwater

A bright, full-on summer wedding by Derwentwater with real emotion and a proper party atmosphere

If you’re planning a wedding in the Lake District, Sam and Katie’s day at Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa is a good example of how a day can really feel when everything just flows.

It was one of those Lake District days where the sun doesn’t ease off. Proper heat, harsh light, the kind of brightness where you’re squinting most of the day. Not the easiest conditions, but it gave everything a really bold, summery feel.

From the moment I arrived, it had a great atmosphere. Relaxed but lively, people properly present and enjoying it rather than waiting around for the next thing.

Katie’s dress really set the tone as well. It was incredible. One of those dresses that just works perfectly in that setting, and you could see how much it meant to her as soon as she put it on.

Over with Sam, things were just as relaxed. No big production, just a few quiet moments getting ready before everything properly started.

I always like including that side of the morning as well. It gives a bit of balance to the story, and it’s often where you get some of the more understated moments before the day picks up.

The moment that set the tone

Nothing really topped the ceremony.

They hadn’t seen each other since the night before, and when Katie came down the aisle to a saxophone version of Beauty and the Beast, it hit properly. Sam was in tears, Katie was in tears, and you could feel it across the whole room.

Those are the moments you can’t recreate or direct. You just have to be ready for them.

A wedding that felt easy

After that, the whole day just flowed. No pressure, no overthinking anything, just people enjoying themselves.

The setting around Derwentwater does a lot of the work, but it was more than that. It had a really good energy to it. A big part of that was the people around them. Their friends and family were brilliant to be around all day, the kind of group that keeps the atmosphere up without anything ever feeling forced.

Working with the light

Midday sun like that isn’t forgiving, so it’s about adapting rather than fighting it. Finding shade, keeping things moving, and not dragging the couple away for ages.

Sam and Katie were completely up for that. We kept everything natural and let moments happen rather than turning it into a long photoshoot.

An unplanned moment on Derwentwater

Later on, we headed out for a short walk with the couple. Me and the videographer were just looking for a quieter spot for a few portraits away from everything.

We came across a small boat tied up at a jetty and got chatting to the owner. We asked if he could move it slightly so we could use the space.

Instead, he invited us out on the lake.

So the four of us ended up squeezed into this little boat on Derwentwater with champagne being passed around. Completely unplanned, but those are always the moments that stick.

Sam even got to drive it, which was easily the highlight of his day.

There were loads of small details throughout the day as well, and the cake definitely stood out. It looked incredible and didn’t last long once it was cut, which is usually a good sign.

The speeches that hit properly

Back at the venue, things settled slightly before the evening kicked off.

The speeches were a highlight. A good mix of humour and genuinely emotional moments, the kind where people are laughing one minute and trying to hold it together the next.

You can’t plan that kind of thing, you just have to be ready for it.

From emotional to full-on party

The reception had a few surprises as well. What looked like a normal waiter suddenly broke into a full-on performance, which caught everyone completely off guard.

It didn’t take long before the whole room was involved, and from that point on the energy just kept building.

As the evening kicked in, it turned into one of those weddings where everything loosens up properly. The dance floor filled quickly, and at one point I was being chased around by kids with glow sticks, which pretty much sums up how it went. Loud, fun, slightly chaotic, but in the best way.

Sparkler exit

To finish the night, they went out with a sparkler exit.

It’s always a good way to end a wedding, and it suited the day perfectly. A proper send-off after everything that had already happened.

Final thoughts

Sam and Katie’s wedding had everything.

A genuinely emotional ceremony, an incredible setting at Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa, and a day that never felt staged or forced at any point.
