Lakeside Hotel is one of those Lake District wedding venues where the setting does a lot of the work for you. Sitting right on the southern shore of Lake Windermere near Newby Bridge, it gives you lake views, gardens, terraces and elegant indoor spaces all within easy reach.
For couples who want a wedding that feels relaxed, scenic and unmistakably Lake District, it is a lovely choice. You do not need to disappear for ages to get beautiful photographs here. The lake, jetty, lawns and hotel spaces give you plenty of variety without pulling you away from your guests.
As a Lake District wedding photographer, I’m always looking for venues that let the day flow naturally. Lakeside Hotel works well because everything is close together, which means you can have beautiful portraits, family photographs and candid moments without the whole day feeling like a photoshoot.
Getting married at Lakeside Hotel
Lakeside Hotel suits couples who want the feeling of a proper Lake District wedding without making the day complicated. The lake is right there, the grounds are easy to use, and there are indoor options if the weather does what Lake District weather often does.
The venue offers options for smaller weddings and larger celebrations, including intimate weddings and classic celebrations. The Oak Room, lakefront lawn, gardens, terrace and private jetty all help make the setting feel personal and very connected to Windermere.
From a photography point of view, that gives you a lot of flexibility. If the weather is kind, you can make the most of the lake and gardens. If it rains, you still have elegant indoor spaces and sheltered areas to keep things relaxed.
Why Lakeside Hotel works so well for wedding photography
The best thing about Lakeside Hotel is how close everything is. Some venues need a drive or a long walk to get the best portraits, but here you have the lake, gardens, terrace and hotel setting all nearby. That makes a big difference on a wedding day because you can get variety without losing half an hour away from everyone.
The private jetty is the obvious spot for portraits, especially when the lake is calm, but it should not be the only part of the gallery. The lakefront lawn is ideal for relaxed family photos, the terrace works well for natural guest moments, and the hotel itself gives the day a more elegant feel.
It is also a good venue for couples who feel awkward in front of the camera. You do not need heavy posing here. A short walk, a few quiet minutes by the water and some gentle direction is usually enough.
Best photo locations at Lakeside Hotel
The private jetty
This is probably the signature photo spot at Lakeside Hotel. It gives you open views across Windermere and works especially well for couple portraits.
The lakefront lawn
A really useful space for family photographs, confetti, drinks reception images and relaxed portraits without moving far from the main celebration.
The terrace
Great for candid moments, guests chatting, drinks, hugs and all the in-between parts of the day that often become some of the best photographs.
The gardens
Useful for softer portraits, quieter moments and a bit of variety away from the main lake view.
The indoor spaces
Important for wet weather. A good Lake District wedding venue needs indoor options, and Lakeside Hotel gives you that safety net if the weather turns.
The shoreline
Perfect for natural couple portraits, especially later in the day when the light softens.
Boat trips on Lake Windermere
One of the things that makes weddings at Lakeside Hotel a bit different is the option of incorporating a boat trip on Lake Windermere.
Whether it is a short trip for just the two of you or something built into the day for your guests, it adds a completely different feel to the wedding. It also creates a natural break in the day without it feeling forced.
From a photography point of view, it opens up some really nice opportunities. The views back towards the shoreline, the movement on the water and the slightly more relaxed pace all lend themselves well to natural, candid images.
Boat trips work best when they are planned into the timeline rather than squeezed in. Even a short trip can take longer than expected once you factor in getting on and off the boat and coordinating guests.
If it is something you are considering, it is worth thinking about how it fits around the ceremony, drinks reception and evening plans so it enhances the day rather than interrupting it.
For most weddings, I would usually suggest keeping it simple and either using it as a quiet moment for the two of you or as part of the guest experience rather than trying to build the whole timeline around it.
Nearby photo locations around Lakeside Hotel
Lakeside Hotel already gives you plenty to work with, but if you want something a little different or more dramatic, there are some great locations nearby.
The key is keeping it simple. Most couples do not want to spend ages travelling on their wedding day, so I only suggest places that are close and easy to access.
Even a quick 10 to 15 minute stop can give you something completely different without disrupting the flow of the day. There are also a few more dramatic options nearby if you are happy to step away for a bit longer.
Fell Foot Park
Distance: about 10 minutes
Right on the southern tip of Windermere, Fell Foot is probably the easiest nearby option. It gives you open lake views, tree-lined paths and a bit more space than the hotel grounds.
It works especially well if you want something slightly more natural and less “hotel” in feel, without going far at all.
Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway Area
Distance: walking distance / very close
If you like something a bit different, the heritage railway nearby can add character and a slightly nostalgic feel.
It is not for everyone, but for the right couple it gives something unique without needing to travel.
Gummers How on a moody Lake District day
Gummers How
Distance: about 15 minutes
If you want a more dramatic Lake District backdrop, Gummer’s How is one of the best nearby viewpoints overlooking Windermere.
It is an easy walk from the car park and gives you that elevated view across the lake and fells without needing a full hike.
Ideal for a short portrait trip if you’re happy to step away for a bit. Note: there is a steep walk to reach the top.
Lakeshore back towards Newby Bridge
Distance: 2–5 minutes
There are quieter stretches of shoreline and riverside near Newby Bridge that can work really nicely for more private, relaxed portraits.
This is a good option if you want something calm and slightly more tucked away.
High Dam
Distance: around 15–20 minutes from Lakeside Hotel
High Dam is a much quieter, more secluded location tucked away in woodland above Finsthwaite. It feels completely different to the open views of Windermere, with still water, trees and a much more peaceful atmosphere.
From a photography point of view, it works really well if you want something softer and more intimate. The reflections on the water can be beautiful when it is calm, and the surrounding woodland gives a more enclosed, natural feel.
It does involve a short walk from the car park, so it needs a bit more planning than somewhere like Fell Foot, but it is not a difficult route.
This is a good option if you want a bit of variety in your gallery without going somewhere busy or overly exposed.
When it works best
High Dam is best suited to couples who are:
- Happy with a short walk
- Want something quieter and more private
- Prefer a natural woodland setting over open lake views
For most weddings at Lakeside Hotel, this would be more of a deliberate portrait trip rather than something quick. If keeping things simple is the priority, staying at the venue or heading to Fell Foot is usually the easier option.
Claife Viewing Station drone photo
Claife Viewing Station
Distance: around 20–25 minutes from Lakeside Hotel (ferry or drive around)
Claife Viewing Station is one of the more unique viewpoints in the Lake District, sitting high above the western shore of Windermere.
It is known for its coloured viewing windows and elevated views across the lake towards Bowness and the surrounding fells. It gives you something completely different to the lakeside feel you get at Lakeside Hotel.
From a photography point of view, it works really well if you want a slightly more dramatic backdrop without committing to a long hike. The walk up is short but worth planning for, and the light here can be especially good later in the day.
This is more of a deliberate portrait stop rather than something you would dip into quickly, but if you are happy to step away from the venue for a short time, it can add a really distinctive set of images to your day.
When it works best
Claife Viewing Station is best suited to couples who are:
- Happy to factor in a short trip
- Want something a bit different to standard lakeside portraits
- Open to a slightly more “planned” portrait moment
For most weddings at Lakeside Hotel, I would still recommend keeping the majority of your time at the venue and using nearby spots like Fell Foot for anything quick and easy. Claife works best when it is a conscious choice rather than something squeezed in.
Keeping it realistic
Most couples getting married at Lakeside Hotel choose to stay at the venue for the majority of the day, and that is usually the best option.
If you do want to include a nearby location, I would normally suggest keeping it short and building it into the timeline naturally rather than turning it into a big trip.
That way you still get something a bit different without missing time with your guests.
What if it rains at Lakeside Hotel?
Rain is always worth planning for in the Lake District, but it does not have to spoil your photographs. At Lakeside Hotel, the advantage is that you have a mix of lake views, indoor spaces and sheltered areas close together. That means we can work around the weather rather than fight against it.
If there is a dry spell, even a short one, we can head outside for portraits by the lake. If it stays wet, we can use the hotel interiors, doorways, covered areas and the softer atmosphere that rainy days often bring. Some of the best Lake District wedding photographs happen when the weather feels a bit dramatic.

My approach to photographing weddings at Lakeside Hotel
My approach is relaxed, natural and mostly documentary-led. I am not there to turn your wedding into a photoshoot. Most of the day is about real moments: people arriving, the nerves before the ceremony, the laughter, the hugs, the little looks between you and the people closest to you.
When direction is needed, I’ll keep it simple. Family photographs are organised efficiently, couple portraits are relaxed, and I’ll guide you just enough so you are not left wondering what to do.
At a venue like Lakeside Hotel, that approach works especially well. The setting is already beautiful, so the photographs do not need to feel forced.
