How Many Hours Of Wedding Photography Do You Really Need?

One of the most common questions I get asked about as a wedding photographer in Cumbria is how many hours of coverage are actually needed.

There isn’t a universal answer. It depends on the size of your wedding, how your day is structured and which parts matter most to you.

Here’s a simple breakdown of how my Bronze, Half Day and Full Day options usually work in practice.

Elopement Package - 90 Minutes

This is designed specifically for couples keeping things simple and intentional.

It usually covers:

  • The ceremony
  • Couple portraits
  • A short walk or second location nearby

This works best for:

  • True elopements
  • Just the two of you or a handful of guests
  • Couples who want something relaxed without the structure of a full wedding day

It’s focused on the experience rather than a timeline, capturing the moment without overcomplicating things.

Bronze Package - 2 Hours

Two hours of coverage is focused and efficient.

It usually covers:

  • Ceremony
  • A small set of group photographs
  • A short couple portrait session

This works best for:

  • Very small weddings
  • Registry office ceremonies
  • Couples who only want the essentials documented

It captures the key moment and immediate celebrations, rather than the full narrative of the day.

Half Day - 4 Hours

Four hours allows the day to breathe a little more.

It often includes:

  • Ceremony
  • Drinks reception
  • Group photographs
  • Couple portraits
  • Candid moments with guests

This is ideal for:

  • Intimate weddings
  • Afternoon ceremonies without evening coverage
  • Couples who are not having a large party

It tells the core story of the day without covering morning preparation or late evening dancing.

Full Day - 10 Hours

Ten hours provides complete coverage.

It usually includes:

  • Morning preparation
  • Ceremony
  • Drinks reception
  • Speeches
  • Couple portraits
  • First dance
  • Early evening atmosphere

This option works best if you want the full story, from the build up through to the shift in energy once the formalities end.

In the Lake District, where travel and changing light can affect timings, full day coverage also gives the most flexibility.

Can You Add Extra Hours?

If you need more time, additional coverage can be added at £250 per hour.

This is useful if:

  • Your timeline shifts
  • Speeches run later than expected
  • You decide you want more evening coverage
  • The light is too good to miss

It gives flexibility without committing to longer coverage than you actually need.

Lake District Specific Considerations

Weddings here are shaped by:

  • Travel between venues
  • Early winter sunsets
  • Weather windows for portraits
  • Outdoor guest movement

In winter, shorter days can make tighter coverage feel rushed. In summer, long evenings create more flexibility.

If you are still shaping your schedule, this Lake District wedding timeline guide explains how to structure the day around light and flow.

How To Decide

Ask yourself:

  • Do you want morning preparation photographed?
  • Are speeches important to you?
  • Are you having a first dance?
  • How important is the evening atmosphere?

The right number of hours is the one that protects the moments you care about most.
